smooth edge bowls

These bowls are just what you would expect, in that the topmost edge is turned for a more refined look. Some bowls incorporate a lid, occasionally in a contrasting wood. I usually add a finial to the lid, and it is almost always a different wood. I typically polish smooth edge bowls, buffing with carnauba wax as the final finish, adding depth and luster to the piece.

Walnut Bowl NFS
This black walnut bowl is one of the first pieces I finished after recovery from surgery. I wanted an almost pottery feel, so I added very rough grooves in the not-round portion to accentuate the polished interior. I made the bottom very rough, then ebonized all but the finished rim. Measures 14" dia. and about 3 3/4 high. NFS, my wife claimed it.

Walnut Bowl Detail
Here is a closeup image of the grooved rim. The bowl blank was not full round, and wall thickness forced me to accentuate the ovality with asymmetrical grooves.

Bowl, Cedar with inclusion
#2007-711 My first bowl! I think this piece is the one that prompted a passion for wood turning. An old, cracked log turned into this! I left in the bark inclusion, so this is not officially a smooth edged bowl, but close enough. Finished with tung-oil and carnauba wax. Approx. 6" dia. x 4 ½" tall. Artists private collection.
